New scheme backs parents to find jobs with flexible working hours

The Government has launched a new scheme designed to help parents balance work and family life by allowing them to search for and find jobs that have been designed with flexible working in mind. Through the website findajob.dwp.gov.uk technology is used to collate thousands of jobs suited particularly for parents juggling childcare with a career.

Announcing the new initiative, Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd said she understood the balancing act experienced by many mums and dads, particularly with the start of a new school term, a key time for parents to return to the workplace: “Why am I doing this? Because I want every parent who’s ready to get back to work to be able to find a job that works for them and their family. Bosses are waking up to the benefits of being more flexible.”

Importantly, the scheme will benefit anyone who is looking for a job that helps them to balance their work with other aspects of their life, whether that is caring for an elderly relative, studying for a degree or simply developing a hobby. This follows the introduction of a Bill earlier this year (July 2019) calling for flexible working to be the default position for all employees, rather than it being up to individuals to request. The Bill was introduced by MP Helen Whately and has passed through to the second reading stage.

These developments should encourage all employers to consider whether the job they are recruiting for could be done flexibly and, if so, to actively promote this in the job advertisement. Employers For Childcare is here to support employers as they work towards realising the benefits of being family – and life – friendly.
