Northern Ireland Childcare Cost Survey 2011
The survey showed that an average family in the region can pay around £16,000 per year for childcare. Furthermore almost half of the respondents commented that the cost of childcare influenced the hours they worked.
We made history in 2010 by carrying out and launching the first ever Childcare Costs Survey for the region. We also committed to carrying out the surveys on a yearly basis and are delighted to have completed the second Childcare Cost Survey 2011 for the region.
The survey identifies the average childcare costs by facility type and location. It also explores the impact that childcare costs have on families in the region. The report also draws comparisons with the 2010 survey results, allowing us to map the change in childcare costs over the last year.
The survey showed that an average family in the region can pay around £16,000 per year for childcare. Furthermore almost half of the respondents commented that the cost of childcare influenced the hours they worked. In order to manage childcare costs many parents changed the way they work, for example by amending their working hours, choosing part-time hours or giving up work altogether.
The qualitative responses from parents illustrated the burden childcare costs place on families, forcing them to consider if work actually pays. The report reiterates the fact that childcare is an economic and a labour market issue.
